Bridal Registry

Though many brides are initially uncomfortable with the idea of bridal registry, it can and should be one of the most enjoyable experiences of the wedding preparations. It is a time when you and your fiancé will choose the things that will be a part of your lifestyle for years to come.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of asking for what you want, remember you are giving your friends and relatives the opportunity to help you build your dreams. The bridal registry is a gift to your guests as it makes their shopping easier and more enjoyable. You also avoid getting duplicate or unwanted gifts.

Most major department stores and national specialty shops offer free computerized bridal registry. This service is particularly helpful if you have out-of-town guests. They can make a simple phone call to select a gift, visit on the Internet or perhaps shop at a branch store.

A number of specialty shops also have bridal registry and can offer wonderful personalized service. Check with specialty shops that carry unique items. Consider linen shops, antique or small gift shops, jewelry stores, stationery shops, kitchen shops, or bookstores. Use your imagination and enjoy the adventure.

Of course, you will want your fiancé to go on this adventure with you. After all, the items you select will furnish the home you will share together. Chances are both of you will already have some household items, so consider what you need before registering. Ask a professional to help you in coordinating all the aspects of setting up your new household. Complimentary services are available in many stores and you will find them to be a tremendous help.

If your fiancé bogs down in the china department, include a trip to the hardware store for small appliances, yard equipment or electrical tools, or go to an outdoors store for barbecue, patio or camping equipment. There are all kinds of items you need when you get married!

In making your selections in any store be sure to choose items that are likely to be in stock for several months or can be easily ordered. Give your guests a selection of gifts from which they can choose and include items in several different price ranges.

After you've made your choices you can sit back. While it is inappropriate to include bridal registry information in wedding invitations, your mother and friends will let others know where you have registered, either by word of mouth or by including information on shower invitations. All you need to do is enjoy the special gifts you will receive and send your thank-you notes!

Nifty Gifting ... With a Personal Touch

Your big day is finally here, and your attendants have been with you for the entire ride ... and most likely long before! So how can you say thanks for all that they've done while keeping it creative? Here are some unique ideas to get you going:

• Have a local jewelry artist create a special piece for each attendant.

• Do you share the same alma mater? College colors are a great starting point for gifts you can make. School-related items (mugs, stationery, a charm, etc.) also make nice mementos.

• Whether guys or gals, everyone loves a trip to the spa! How about a gift certificate, or maybe a spa party where you and your friends can spend a day together, just enjoying being pampered?

• For the seamstress type, a unique hand-sewn purse, makeup bag, or other practical item for each of your maids will not only be appreciated, but you are sure to be fondly thought of every time it's used!

• Go along with your day's theme - are you a "pink princess"? Incorporate pink into your gifts (think gift bags with pink earrings, pink picture frames, etc.) Having a beach wedding? How about a bag withsunscreen, a CD of reggae music, a towel, and sunglasses?

Regardless of how you choose to show your gratitude to the members of your bridal party, they will definitely appreciate it. But making it personal ensures they'll remember you and this special time together even more. Good luck!
